Using
Lawyers
If
you are exasperated by lawyers, you are not alone.
Resentment about the cost of, or the need to use, lawyers
has long been a feature of the business scene. Frustration
with advice which appears to thwart commercial objectives
and bemusement about legal niceties and jargon do nothing
to help. Few other professions have earned their own category
in joke anthologies, but the huge number of jokes about lawyers
are a measure of the need for therapy!
In-house
lawyers can contribute hugely to sucessful business development
and preservation. Why
not try one on an interim basis?
If
the establishment of an in-house function makes no sense,
there is usually scope for obtaining better value from your
external advisers, ranging from reducing "repeat"
business which does not merit consultation to involving them
earlier in situations or transactions where the cost of remedial
or damage limitation work could be significant. Most external
advisers will welcome more coherence in the relationship with
their client.
