Career
Progression
As
many departments have a non-heirachical structure, the scope
for visible promotion may be limited. This does not matter
if you are putting effort into building competencies, and
developing your skills.
Competencies
(a ghastly term) should be taken seriously by in-house lawyers.
They may seem like an artificial HR device at first sight,
but once you have cut through the jargon, they are really
useful for assessing performance and charting development
needs. Examples of some which are relevant for in-house lawyers:
- Customer Focus
- Confidence and
Conviction
- Impact and Influence
- Organisational
Awareness
- Conceptual Thinking
Lawyers
in Business specialises in applying competencies and skills
to the situations with which in-house lawyers are confronted.
And
by the way, don't only look at your cv at the end of a bad
day. Review it annually. It will reveal whether you are making
the progress to which you aspire.
